Mid-June Status Report

E-mail Print PDF

Most of the garden areas, both the rented private plots and shared areas, are now planted. Along the street, we've planted many flowers and even some edible-but-also-ornamental plants like brussels sprouts. To the right of the access road, in rough order from the street inward, are: the shared herb garden, pumpkin patch, three sisters (corn, beans, and squash), sweet corn, several kinds of potatoes, sunflower "room", tomatoes, wheat, dry beans, abenake corn, millet, and oats. We also have a small planting of onions in the single small unrented plot, four fruit trees (apple, cherry, peach, and plum) and a few other plants mixed in. The outer circle in the round garden is being planted with raspberries, the middle circle contains blueberries, and the inner circle three kinds of strawberries. Inter-planted along the paths in the inner ring are resina calendula and some grapes for a future arbor.

As of June 1st, we have a half-time volunteer, Kelly, who will be working all summer in the gardens Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday and Thursday evenings (although this schedule is subject to change). She has already tackled a huge amount of weeding and planting in the two weeks that she has been here.

In other news: We have submitted a grant request for fencing to Home Depot (thanks to Naomi for this effort!) and have been working to reduce the ground hog population by trapping them (thanks to Rod and Bliss for working on this).

All in all a fantastic start for the first year of the Cambridge Community Garden!
